COST OF LIVING GOING UP? THE COST OF YOUR FAVOURITE TIPPLE DOESN'T HAVE TO

It’s no secret the last two years have been difficult for everybody worldwide in the fight against Covid-19. One backlash of the pandemic is that the cost of living is guaranteed to rise over the next couple of years for us all. The Bank of England have announced the rate of inflation will hit 6% around Spring 2022 with experts predicting energy bills could rise by up to 50% for some households by the end of this year. The spike doesn’t just stop here unfortunately with expected rises in food bills & prescription charges on top of the services we enjoy such as phones & internet topped off with increased costs in services, we rely on like travel in particular rail fares. It doesn’t all have to be doom & gloom…

"Homebrewing, it's more than a hobby"

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BREWING YOURSELF?

Brewing at home is no longer the domain of everybody’s favourite Granddad and with advancements in kit technology the results can be better than anything you can buy on a supermarket shelf for a fraction of the price. It’s easy to see why over 1 million people in the UK enjoy the benefits of “made at home” beverages.

COST

As household finances begin to cause stress one shining light is the cost-effective method of brewing your own beverages. You can make your own beverages that will be far superior to anything available to purchase from the supermarket with a basic equipment starter kit costing you sub £20 on the Brew2Bottle store. It is important to remember equipment is completely re-usable it’s just a case of topping up on your favourite kits here on out.

VARIETY

Home brewing has come a long way since the days of creating a potato vodka mash in the bathtub. The developments in malts, concentrates & distilling equipment give you the ability to create your favourite beverages from the comfort of home. The beer kit range now offers anything from a basic lager, real or dark ale right through to something as complex as a Hazy IPA. The wine concentrates have followed suit allowing us to create our every day favourites such as Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc or Merlot through to more complex wines such as an Amarone. The home brewing world doesn’t just stop at beer, wine or cider with the introduction of specialist distilling equipment you can now create your favourite spirits & liqueurs.

TIME

The common perception is that home brewing takes up a lot more time & effort than it’s worth but as equipment & kits have developed over the years this couldn’t be any further from the truth. The kits can be setup easily inside 30 minutes & up to 60 minutes to bottle at the end all that is required in between is a little bit of patience as the magic happens inside your brewing vessel. The amount of time spent brewing is that minimal it’s easy to forget you brewed it yourself!

SOCIAL

The popularity of home brewing through the advancements of equipment & kits has grown over the last few years which has led to a sharp growth in the number of communities available for brewers to join whether that’s a group on social media like Facebook or Twitter to an online Home Brew Forum or through brand apps like Grainfather. The home brewing world now has a bit of something for everyone whether that’s a brewer starting completely from scratch, looking to get back into it or the avid brewer.

COMPLEXITY

One of the beauties of home brewing is you really can make it as complicated or as simple as you like, whether that’s brewing in a fermentation bucket using an extract kit or going all the way with all grain using an all-in-one brewing system. The opportunities are endless and a degree in chemistry is no longer required.

HOW TO HOME BREW?

  • Ensure all equipment is appropriately sanitised prior to use. Please read through instructions & check contents are all located in the box prior to brewing. This step can take between 30-60 minutes, No Rinse Sanitiser will reduce cleaning times.
  • Empty contents of chosen kit into brewing vessel alongside recommended fermentables applying hot & cold-water volumes as instructed. Please rinse any cans/pouches & pour into fermentation vessel. This will take no more than 5 minutes.
  • It is important to take a Hydrometer reading at this stage, record reading & check liquid temperature is as instructed in the instructions. Please add yeast & stir gently. This step will take no more than 2-3 minutes.
  • Place lid on fermentation vessel and attach Airlock. This will take 30 seconds.
  • Fermentation time varies on type of kit, volume of malt/concentrate or yeast type so ensure instructions are checked thoroughly for fermentation timescale prior to brewing. Please ensure Hydrometer is used to take & record readings throughout fermentation stage, Hydrometer readings take no longer than 30 seconds. Please note other than Hydrometer readings no further human interaction is required at this stage.
  • Please ensure any bottles/kegs are appropriately sanitised prior to transferring fermented beverage. Add any recommended sugars/malts/chippings at this stage as advised in the instructions. Please note wine will be transferred to another vessel before transferring to the bottles for the wine to clear. This stage can take up to 90 minutes from start to finish for both.
  • Beer/wine & cider will need some time to mature, no human interaction is required simply leave for a week to condition & a week to chill. Please note more expensive wine kits may take up to 4 weeks at this stage to allow the enhanced depth and increasingly complex flavours to develop.
  • ENJOY.
